Planning guide

Hiring a private driver in Sri Lanka: what to know.

Costs, what is included, where your driver stays, tipping, and how to pick someone you can trust.

Hiring a car with a driver is the most popular way for independent travelers to see Sri Lanka. Roads are slow and winding, distances take longer than the map suggests, and a good driver doubles as a local guide. This guide explains how pricing works and what to check before you book.

How pricing works

Drivers price per car, not per person. The price depends on total distance, the number of days, the vehicle, and how many stops you add. A one-way transfer is priced on the route; a multi-day tour is priced as a whole, with the driver staying with you each night.

As a guide, these are sample day-trip prices from Kandy (per car, in US dollars):

Day trip from KandyFrom (USD, per car)
Kandy city tour$25
Pinnawala$35
Kitulgala$45
Nuwara Eliya$50
Sigiriya and Dambulla$60
Polonnaruwa$80
Anuradhapura$80

What is included in the price

  • The vehicle and fuel.
  • The driver's time and local knowledge.
  • Reasonable waiting time at stops and for delayed flights.

Entrance fees, safari jeeps, meals, and your hotels are paid separately. Ask about parking and highway tolls for your route too. Ask for the inclusions in writing on WhatsApp so there are no surprises.

Where does the driver sleep?

Most hotels, guesthouses, and safari lodges in Sri Lanka have driver rooms, and drivers are used to this arrangement. When you book a multi-day tour, the quote should say whether the driver's accommodation and meals are included. With Paradise Kandy Taxi it is stated up front.

Tipping your driver

Tipping is not required but it is customary in Sri Lanka when the service is good. Many travelers give a tip at the end of the trip based on the number of days. Give it in cash, in rupees or US dollars.

How to choose a trusted driver

  • Read recent reviews on Google and Tripadvisor, not only on the driver's own website.
  • Get a fixed price in writing before you travel.
  • Avoid large up-front deposits. Paradise Kandy Taxi takes no deposit.
  • Check the vehicle has air conditioning and enough space for your luggage.
  • Make sure you can reach the driver directly on WhatsApp before and during the trip.

Is it better than renting a car?

Foreign drivers need a local permit on top of their licence, and Sri Lankan roads, with buses, tuk-tuks, and mountain bends, are tiring for visitors. Once fuel, insurance, and parking are added, a car with a driver often costs about the same as self-drive. See private car and driver hire for the full comparison.
